We are looking for a Quality Inspector to work with CNC Machinists to minimise waiting times and deliver “better than the norm” quality outcomes while driving continuous improvement activities to streamline the quality team's processes and improve efficiency. Proactively contribute to Penta maintaining 90+% OTD.

You will be responsible for coordinating, conducting, and minimising components waiting for first-of- inspection and mentoring machinists to achieve 90+% right-first time first-off inspections. You will coach and mentor machinists to load and run CMM programs for intermediate in-process first-offs.

 

What we are looking for from our Quality Inspector:

  • Experience of the inspection process in busy subcontract Machine Shops or Engineering sector.
  • Hands-on expertise and confidence in using all types of traditional measuring equipment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coach machinists in the inspection process.

Hours of Work: Monday – Thursday: 7.30 am to 5.00 pm, 30-minute lunch break. Friday: 7:30am to 12:30pm.

Work with production machinists to minimise waiting times and deliver “better than the norm” quality outcomes. Engage and play an equal part in continuous improvement activities to streamline the quality department’s procedures to improve efficiency.

Outcomes

1. Coordinate, conduct and minimise components waiting for first off inspection. 

  • Conduct and expedite first off inspections in core and overtime hours.
  • Reduce first offs waiting in conflict by coordinating with all designated inspectors.
  • Mentor machinists to achieve 90+% right first time first off inspections. 

2. Review & mentor in process inspection procedures with machinists.

  • Coach and mentor machinists in robust measurement techniques.
  • Work together with colleagues to cross train and upskill.
  • Issue specific inspection equipment for in process inspection.
  • Coach and mentor machinists to load and run CMM programs for intermediate in process first offs.
  • Conduct special geometric or difficult in process inspections when required.

3. Support with sub-con, finishing and final inspection in the department.

  • Minimise components waiting for pre-sub-con, post sub-con and final inspection.
  • Proactively contribute to Penta achieving 90+ % OTD.

4. Proactively contribute to improving external and internal quality outcomes.

  • Discuss, advise and agree in process inspection plans during works order preparation.
  • Contribute to completing immediate 8D-NCR investigations with simplified feedback within 48 hours of the event to all areas of the business de-risking “margin burning issues” to assist in driving 1 % net profit improvement for 5 continuous years.
  • Checking signatory for reverse engineering, tooling modification and machining design drawings sign off.

5. Proactively contribute to the quality department’s continuous improvement activities.

  • Play an equal part in the fortnightly quality L10 meeting.
  • Red flag issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • 100% completion of “to do’s” within 14 days, complete one Rock per quarter.
  • Assist with internal calibration of tooling.
  • Follow ISO9001:2015 procedures and feedback systems.

Coordinating and conducting first off inspections

  • Taking care to complete thorough first off inspections, be “a devil’s advocate” to keep a check on yourself.
  • Prioritising first off inspections to maximise production workflow.
  • Encourage machinists to help their teammates, clean up or accomplish something else whilst waiting for the first off.
  • Expedite decision making when interacting with fellow employees to help make the best commercial, common-sense decision to resolve an issue.
  • Be flexible and adaptable in your duties and with overtime to help team mates and the company meet customer’s expectations.

Reviewing and mentoring around in process inspection

  • Disseminate one's’ own knowledge and experience to all fellow work colleagues to the benefit of all.
  • Be sensitive, supportive and not talk down to people.
  • Encourage and guide production team mates that better than the norm, consistent quality is what we deliver.
  • Be conscientious and take care when issuing and returning inspection equipment.

Conducting sub-con, finishing and final inspection

  • Mentoring so that in-process inspection by production employees is a given. 
  • Disseminate one's’ own knowledge and experience to all fellow work colleagues to the benefit of all.
  • Be sensitive, supportive and not talk down to people.
  • Encourage and guide production team mates that better than the norm, consistent quality is what we deliver.
  • Be conscientious and take care when issuing and returning inspection equipment.

Conducting sub-con, finishing and final inspection

  • Taking care to complete thorough first off inspections, be “a devil’s advocate” to keep a check on yourself.
  • Use highlighters and measurement notes to ensure thoroughness.
  • Be flexible and adaptable in your duties and with overtime to help team mates and the company meet customer’s expectations.
  • When dealing with suppliers give clear, honest, sensitive and supportive communication. Avoid talking down to people.
  • Help highlight good performing and bad performing suppliers.

Contributing to reducing customer NCR’s, improving internal quality outcomes through 8D investigations and corrective action reviews

  • Red flag issues that keep occurring.
  • No blaming, complaining and defending, help solve problems by finding solutions.
  • Ask questions rather than make statements to help improve understanding, consider different points of view and make better decisions quicker.
  • Help implement improvement projects as part of the normal day to day activities.

Contributing to the department’s continuous improvement activities and ISO procedures

  • Be positive about the need to have a KPI focus to help drive and monitor progress.
  • Embrace change in processes and “give it a go”, we need to be ahead of the game.
