Aluminium 5251 is a medium strength magnesium manganese alloy best known for its good ductility and formability. It has high corrosion resistance, and as a result is commonly used in marine environments.
5251 is traditionally recognised as a general sheet metal working grade. It is not heat treatable to higher strength.
Here are the standard stock sizes/colours for 5251 in the UK.

Sheet and plate – 0.2mm to 25mm – Spec: BS EN 485-2:2008
5251 is moderately easy to machine but can be less forgiving than harder alloys like 6082 or 2014A.
It may require slower feed rates and sharper tooling for optimal results.
5251 is commonly used in marine, transport, and pressure vessel applications due to its corrosion resistance and good strength-to-weight ratio.
Selecting the appropriate material and grade is among the important early decisions you'll make when designing your CNC machined component. In this blog we look at the most common grades of aluminium, one of the most versatile metals, and the factors to consider to select the best grade for your next project.
